MVS: the client for Hikrobot industrial cameras

MVS is the program that finds a Hikrobot camera on the network, connects it, sets exposure and gain, shows the live image and saves frames. It does not build inspection algorithms: that is what VisionMaster is for.

Three different products

the client and the SDK are numbered independently. Inside MVS 5.1.0 are Machine Vision Camera SDK 4.8.2.2 and Frame Grabber SDK 2.8.0.2 — a different number for the client and for the SDK is normal.

Download MVS and SDK

The full MVS package already includes the SDK with samples: the configuration client, IP and network card configurators, firmware update, log viewer, interface drivers. The separate SDK Runtime package is needed only where your own software works with the camera without the client; it has its own version. All files are hosted on the MVisionPro server; the version and size next to each button update automatically after a new file is verified.

During installation choose the drivers for your interfaces: GigE, USB3 and PCIe are in the package; the Hikrobot frame grabber parameters (CML, CXP, GEV, XoF) apply only to the respective boards.

Which version your camera series needs

Today the manufacturer has one current client version for all area scan, line scan and frame-grabber camera families (CS, CU, CT, CH, CA, CE, CL, CB, CI) — 5.1.0 for Windows and Linux and 5.0.0 for macOS. Older cameras with firmware from previous years usually work with it too; if you have a camera bought several years ago and the client does not see it after the steps below, send us the model and firmware version — we will pick the client version. CoaXPress cameras need MVS 3.2.1 or newer. If you only have the part number, send it and we will name the version.

Code readers and smart cameras have their own clients

Installing the wrong client is the most common reason a device does not appear in the list.

Connecting a GigE camera

  1. Cable CAT-5e or better; power from an adapter or PoE under IEEE 802.3af/802.3at.
  2. During MVS installation select the GIGE driver; leave the rest at defaults.
  3. Switch the Windows firewall off while working; if policy forbids that, open the needed ports specifically.
  4. The network card may use either an automatic or a static address.
  5. Card settings: Jumbo Packet 9014 bytes, Transmit Buffers 2048, Receive Buffers 2048, Interrupt Moderation Rate — Extremum. The same is available in MVS: GigE → NIC Settings.
  6. Camera and computer in one segment; the camera address is changed through Modify IP.
  7. Connect by double-clicking the device in the list.

Frequently asked questions

Which MVS version should I download for my camera?

One current version for all families: 5.1.0 for Windows and Linux, 5.0.0 for macOS. Older cameras usually work with it; if the client does not see a camera bought years ago, send us the model and firmware — we will pick the version.

Does MVS work with Hikrobot code readers?

No. Code readers, including the ID7000 series, use IDMVS. Smart cameras SC1000–SC3000 use SCMVS, SC5000X and SC6000 use SC_VisionMaster. Installing the wrong client is the most common reason a device does not appear in the list.

How is MVS different from MVS SDK and VisionMaster?

MVS is a ready application with a window: find a camera, connect, set parameters, view and save the image. MVS SDK is the developer kit so that your own program does the same. VisionMaster is a platform where an inspection algorithm is built from ready operators: positioning, measurement, defect detection, recognition.

MVS does not see the camera — what to check first?

Power and network link first: the indicator on the camera and the link indicator on the port. If the camera is visible but will not connect, the camera and the computer are almost always in different network segments, or another program holds the camera. Change the address in MVS through the IP configurator to bring the camera into the computer's segment.

Do I need a separate driver for a GigE camera?

No: the GIGE driver is selected in the MVS installer. There is also the option Enable Jumbo Frame for All NICs, which raises network transfer speed. Leave the other installer settings at defaults.

How do I save and transfer camera settings?

Camera settings are stored in UserSets on the camera itself; saving an image is a different action. Exporting and importing settings between cameras is limited to the same model and firmware. MVS 5.1.0 adds export and import of the changed-parameter history.
